Abraham Avila Prayer Letter: Did Your Mom Help You Put on Your Tie?Did your mom help you put on your tie?

My wife and I had been looking at a way to further integrate ourselves into our community here in Lima. God opened a door for us through teaching at a private school near our apartment. The position I fill is that of a substitute teacher. I received an email one early morning requesting my assistance. I put on my Sunday best and walked out my apartment door. I was a little nervous at first. However, the excitement and joy soon took over. Little by little, the students entered the classroom door and took their seats. I was soon flooded with questions: “What’s your name?” “Did it hurt to grow your mustache?” “Do you speak English/Spanish?” “Did your mom help you put on your tie? My mom helps me.” Many of these students are businessmen’s children. Some children speak three languages due to their parents’ businesses, which take them to different countries. A few children spoke English, Korean, and Spanish. Some spoke English, German, and Spanish. It was quite a diverse group. I had the opportunity to teach a few Bible classes. I took the liberty to teach it as if it were my Sunday school class. Needless to say, the kids were floored with the biblical truths and were pretty let down when I had to cut it short due to lack of school time. They were very impressed with all the classes I taught, and they have asked me to return more frequently. I even received an email from a teacher I subbed for, letting me know that the kids really enjoyed the classes. Praise the Lord! My wife is also scheduled to teach in the upcoming months. Please pray that we may be a blessing to the children and their families.

We had a good conversation during our one-hour bus ride.

I was in Downtown Lima, running some errands for one of our churches. I happened to strike up a conversation with a man on my bus. We had a good conversation during our one-hour bus ride. His name was Jaime. He came from Peru’s northern region and had been working in Lima for the past three years. He explained to me how he had been saving money so he could bring his family down to Lima. He stated that he missed them sorely. I took that opportunity to relate the Gospel to him. He understood how God yearns to spend time with us. He understood that sin had come between us and God. In short, he understood the Gospel clearly and sweetly trusted Christ as his Saviour there in his bus seat. I handed him a tract to take home. He states that when he brings his family down to Lima, he will visit one of our churches.

To be continued . . .

I am thankful for praying and giving friends such as you. If it weren’t for you, my family and I would not be able to be here in Lima, Peru. We love you and pray for you often. I pray that the Lord continues to bless you and your family.
