ABRAM GOMEZ

ON DEPUTATION TO TEAM GHANA

ABOUT

Abram 01/29

I was born and raised in what I would call a backslidden Baptist home in East Los Angeles. I was taught good doctrine in church and private school but scarcely showed the love of God or a Christ-like example at home. Even so, at nine years old, I accepted Christ as my Saviour and had it in my heart that I was supposed to be a missionary to Africa. I never stopped going to church, but as I grew older, my heart grew colder toward the things of God. As I got into my teen and young-adult years, I gravitated to a life of worldliness; and, as a result, the burdens and tragedies of a sinful life grew heavier and heavier.

When the chastisement of the Lord grew heaviest in my late twenties, I decided that I would stop fighting God and quit living for myself. In desperation, I finally fell to my knees and surrendered my life to Him. In the years that followed, the Lord began to transform me and lead me into ministry. I was excited to serve the Lord in soul winning, teaching, bus route, Bible college, etc.; but even in the midst of ministry, I soon perceived that I had hit a wall in my personal growth and was thus led to Victory Baptist Church in Chino, California, where I began to grow (where I needed to the most) and experience the transformation my heart so longed for. Pastor Brian Pattison helped me to overcome lifelong insecurities and discover the will of God for my life. To put it simply, he was a faithful friend. We went soul winning together, served in Skid Row together, and went on a missions trip together; he even helped me get to what would eventually be my mission field: Ghana, West Africa.

Serving at a homeless rescue mission had a tremendous effect on my heart, especially in regards to missionary work. I bugged my pastor quite a bit about mission trips until he eventually helped me go to Ghana twice: called on the first trip, confirmed on the second. Since that second trip (January – February 2025), I’ve restructured my life to get back to Ghana as soon as I can to reunite with my friends and converts and reach more people with the Gospel for the glory of God.

Now, I am thankful to be living out God’s plan for my life. That same purpose He called me to in third grade: to be a full-time missionary in West Africa, reaching people with the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I will be joining Team Ghana in winning souls, discipling converts, and training ministry leaders through the efforts of our church, Fundamental Baptist Church International, and our college, Hyles-Anderson College of West Africa.

Specifically, I will assist national pastors in developing businesses that will allow them to provide for and grow their churches. I will be teaching, mentoring, and counseling at our Bible college, as well as assisting in the media department.

  • Abram Gomez Prayer Letter: Discipling, Downsizing, and . . . Departing SoonThese past few months have been an exciting time of transition, growth, and, of course, deputation. The ministry I have been serving with for the past few years has gone through a huge transformation: Emmanuel Baptist Rescue Mission, which has been located in the Skid Row district of Downtown Los Angeles, has moved and morphed into a men’s discipleship program in Pomona, California. This transition was both difficult and disheartening to many of our supporting churches, staff, and program guys, but having been here at the new location for almost a month, I’ve personally witnessed growth and encouragement like never before in the guys we are investing in. It has been a privilege for me to fellowship with and disciple these men who are seeking whole-life transformation, and as I do so, I can’t help but imagine my doing a similar work soon with men in Ghana, West Africa.

With this transition came quite a bit of downsizing. Moving from a rather large facility to a small, apartment-sized unit with four other guys, I had to get rid of quite a bit of things. This was also a blessing to me because I will inevitably need to downsize before leaving for Ghana in May/June of 2026. I am reminded that this city, this country, this world is not my home—I’m just passing through. Physical belongings are of little importance; what’s done for Christ is of utmost importance. As my departure date draws nearer, I am continuing the admittedly difficult task of parting with my pet, my truck, my business, and my belongings. Pray for me.

I also recently had the opportunity to go on a weeklong missions trip to Palmares, Costa Rica. I served with two churches, performing various painting and construction projects, and was overjoyed to pass out hundreds of John & Romans, as well as preach, present, and polish a truck for my good friend, Samuel White, a second-generation missionary doing a great work leading his family and church.

I am at about 60% of my target monthly support, and I still need quite a bit of support in a short amount of time. Please, please, please pray that God connects me with the right people and churches who will partner with me in fervent prayer and financial support so that I can get to and stay in Ghana, where I will help train nationals to start and sustain Gospel-centered churches. Please also pray that God will continue to prepare my heart and mind for the work that He has called me to do. Thank you so much for your love and prayerful support.

For the sake of the Gospel,

    Abram Gomez
