My name is Ron Back. When I was eight years old, a missionary from a local independent Baptist church in Pierceton, Indiana, invited my brothers and me to church.  My parents enjoyed the thought of having a break from us boys every Sunday, so they encouraged us to go with the missionary family.  Shortly after this first encounter with Bro. and Mrs. Ernie Mason, I received Christ as my Saviour in Junior Church in 1980. I believe, even though I was only eight years old, that God put the desire in my heart to be a missionary, but since my family was not saved nor in a local church, Satan was able to quench that call.

My young adult years were spent out of church.  I did not get scripturally baptized until 1994 while I was attending a Baptist church in Rancho Santa Marguerita, California, during my enlistment in the United States Marine Corps.  Shortly after I was baptized, God called me a second time to the mission field under a missionary to Australia.  I went to the pastor and inquired of him about missions.  I thought God wanted me to go build churches physically with hammer and nails, not by preaching.  My pastor told me that we did not support missionaries except the kind that go and preach the Gospel and win souls to Christ, building the churches with people, not materials.  I was convinced that I was not the missionary type because I did not think I could talk or preach to large groups of people.

When my enlistment in the USMC was up, I chose to be a husband and a father instead of a career soldier.  We went back to Warsaw, Indiana, where my family was and decided to start our family there also.  Within two weeks of getting back to Warsaw in the spring of 1996, we found Open Bible Baptist Church, pastored by Sam Carns, a Hyles-Anderson College graduate.  I thought that I had finally found a home that would be permanent for my whole family.

In May of 1996, Layne Jones, a missionary to the Philippines, preached at my home church of the need for more missionaries.  This time I realized God’s call on my life. I immediately responded to the invitation and surrendered to be a missionary.  Within just a few months, I understood that God wanted me to go to Australia.

  • Zach and Cassandra Foust Jr. Prayer Letter: Missions ConferenceWe are so grateful for your prayers for us here in Peru! The last several weeks have brought many blessings. At the end of February, Cassandra and I took a trip back to the States for more doctor’s appointments. Many tests were run to see the progress of the treatments I’ve been on. Praise the Lord for good results, although I’m not yet back to 100%. The doctor gave some new orders, and they will continue to monitor my health. While back in the States, I was able to participate in one of my best friend’s weddings, as well as visit Rogers City Baptist Church in Rogers City, Michigan. Pastor Drew Rogers and his family were such an encouragement to us. Pastor Rogers’ dad, Bro. David Rogers, had recently spoken at our church in Peru for our church anniversary in January. It was exciting to get to know a church with whom we already had a close connection.

Upon returning to Peru, we started a new semester of Team Peru’s Christian school. Cassandra is teaching many classes, and the semester is off to a great start. Our church has several students enrolled this year, and there are 31 students total in the school.

In the month of March, we also had our annual Missions Conference! Our church currently supports 15 missionaries, and this year we were able to host Missionary Exodo Buitrago and his family. They are missionaries in Colombia who were trained by and sent out from my parents’ church here in Lima. Our Missions Conference was the week before they made their move to Colombia! They went on deputation and raised all of their support here in Peru. We had a great conference, and Bro. Exodo did a wonderful job encouraging the church on the theme of missions. One exciting blessing was that a new family came to church during the conference, and the mom and dad both accepted Christ!

Please pray for several upcoming events! First of all, at the beginning of April, we start a new semester of the Bible institute. We have been averaging about 50 students training to serve the Lord. We have men and women from our church signed up this year for the first time. Please pray for these students!

Please also pray for our Easter service! This year we’re having a big outreach push for our bus routes, Sunday schools, and witnessing. There will be some friendly competition between classes and routes. We’re praying for many to be saved and many visitors to come to church.

Over the next few months, we have some exciting trips planned to remote parts of Peru. We will be helping host conferences, train ministries, and give out water-purification systems. Please pray for these trips to go well. We look forward to updating you all soon with what the Lord is doing.

    God bless you all,

    Zach and Cassandra Foust
