Chris and Irene Williams Prayer Letter: In Ecuador for a Few Months

Thank you for your sacrificial giving towards the airplane project! We are happy to report that we have paid 50% of the engine bill. We still need to raise more money in order to finish paying for the engine in January so that we can pick it up and install it. We also still need the funds to get the instruments and the STOL modification. The repairs are going well, and the airplane is now sitting on its own three wheels again. I still need to repair the center tunnel channel, but I will get to that in January. We were able to get this far with the airplane by the end of September. At the same time, we were preparing to head to Ecuador for a few months. We arrived in Ecuador at the end of September and have been helping to prepare for a Fuegos de Evangelismo (Fires of Evangelism) Bible conference that Pastor Gallo will be hosting mid-November.

As I was finishing up work on the airplane before leaving it for three months, our car engine slipped a rod bearing. The engine needs to be replaced. This happened while I was three hours from our home, with only five days until our flight to Ecuador. Irene had to come get me with a friend’s car. When we return, I now have another project to tackle. Thankfully, it appears to be an easy one to replace.

Right after we arrived here in Ecuador, Irene started having high blood pressure problems. It took a couple of weeks, a few doctors’ appointments, and several tests to get it back under control. We think that it may have been partly caused by the move and change of climate and altitude. We are living at 9,600 feet here in Riobamba, which we were not acclimatized to. We also know that Satan does not want us here, especially since he knows that what we are doing is going to impact many lives for Christ. He is doing all that he can to hinder us, but we know that God is always in control and that, with His help, nothing can happen that is too big for us to handle.

We have been wanting to get our printing ministry going. When we were last here, we purchased a copier so that we could produce tracts and discipleship materials. We put it in the Bible institute office so that they could use it while we were gone. In the last three weeks, we have started producing materials. So far, we have printed over 2,700 discipleship booklets and 22,000 tracts. The discipleship booklets and the tracts that we have made are already being used. Pastor Gallo and his people have been thrilled to have custom tracts available which contain their church information. The church is in a newer neighborhood that does not yet have paved roads or even street names. It can be hard to direct potential visitors to the church. The tracts have a map and phone numbers so that anyone who has one can easily find their way or ask for a ride to church.

After the conference in November, we will be heading down to the edge of the jungle to look for property. Pastor Gallo wants to see another church started in the area between Macas and Puyo and has a pastor ready to get it going. He is looking for a property that is about 50 acres in size. It needs to be big enough for a church facility, a Bible camp, and our own runway. He believes that we can get a property like this for about $75,000 to $100,000.
A couple of weeks ago, Pastor Gallo and I, along with our wives, were asked to attend a Missions Conference in Larcachaca, which is northeast of Quito. This town is very high in the mountains at almost 12,000 feet and is the last town before crossing to the east side of the Andes. Both Pastor Gallo and I preached. The conference was a great encouragement to Pastor Byron Imbaqingo’s people and several other pastors and members from their churches who attended. On the last night, we were served a special treat of cuy (“guinea pig”). They were actually very good, despite their appearance.

Pastor Byron has requested tracts and discipleship booklets for his church, and we are happy to be able to be providing him with a good supply. He has started a Bible institute in his church and is running bus routes to several other towns nearby. On Saturday, he took us over the mountain pass (12,900 feet) to his hometown of Oyacachi, where we met Pastor Ascanta, who is pastoring the church that Pastor Byron’s late father pastored. We are providing him with printed materials as well. After this, we visited a trout farm and were able to purchase fresh trout to take home with us. We had a great time and look forward to seeing both pastors here at the conference in November.

We always appreciate it when people pray for us. I would like to ask you to pray for:

1. Irene’s high blood pressure (which seems to be under control right now).
2. Safety and health during our time here in Ecuador.
3. Potential property between Macas and Puyo for another church, a camp, and our own runway.
4. Finances for the airplane engine—we need $35,000.
5. Finances for the airplane instrument package—we need $25,000.
6. Finances for the airplane STOL modification—we need $7,500.
7. Additional funds for the printing ministry.

¡Gracias por su donación sacrificada hacia el proyecto del avión! Nos complace informar que hemos pagado el 50% de la factura del motor. Todavía necesitamos recaudar más dinero para poder terminar de pagar el motor en enero para poder recogerlo e instalarlo. También nos falta dinero para conseguir los instrumentos y la modificación STOL. Las reparaciones van bien, y el avión ahora está sentado sobre sus propias tres ruedas nuevamente. Esto sucedió mientras estaba a 3 horas de nuestra casa con solo 5 días antes de nuestro vuelo a Ecuador. Irene tuvo que venir a buscarme en el carro prestado de una amiga. Cuando regresemos a US tengo otro proyecto en que trabajar. Afortunadamente, este motor parece ser fácil de reemplazar.

Inmediatamente después de que llegamos a Ecuador, Irene comenzó a tener problemas de presión arterial alta. Tomó un par de semanas, algunas citas médicas y varias pruebas para volver a controlarla. Creemos que puede haber sido causado en parte por el movimiento y el cambio de clima y altitud. Estamos viviendo a 9,600 pies aquí en Riobamba, a los que no estábamos aclimatados. También sabemos que Satanás no nos quiere aquí, especialmente porque sabe que lo que estamos haciendo va a impactar muchas vidas para Cristo. La pusimos en la oficina del Instituto Bíblico para que pudieran usarlo mientras no estuviéramos. En las últimas tres semanas, hemos comenzado a producir materiales. Hasta el momento, hemos impreso más de 2.700 libritos de discipulado y 22.000 folletos. Los libritos de discipulado y los folletos que hemos hecho ya se están utilizando. El pastor Gallo y su gente han estado encantados de tener folletos disponibles, que contienen información sobre su iglesia. La iglesia está en un barrio muy nuevo y aún no tiene caminos pavimentados ni nombres de calles, por esto puede ser difícil dirigir a prospectos visitantes a la iglesia. Los folletos tienen un mapa y números de teléfono para que cualquier persona que tenga uno pueda encontrar fácilmente su camino o pedir que lo lleven a la iglesia.

Después de la conferencia en noviembre, nos dirigiremos al borde de la selva para buscar una propiedad. El pastor Gallo quiere iniciar otra iglesia entre los pueblos de Macas y Puyo, y tiene un pastor listo para ponerla en marcha. Está buscando una propiedad de aproximadamente 50 acres. Tiene que ser lo suficientemente grande para las instalaciones de una iglesia, un campamento bíblico y nuestra propia pista. Él ha comenzado un Instituto Bíblico en su iglesia y está corriendo rutas de autobús a varios otros pueblos cercanos. El sábado, nos llevó a través de la montaña (12,900 pies de altura) a su ciudad natal, Oyacachi, donde conocimos al pastor Ascanta, quien ahora pastorea la iglesia ahí.
